Chapter 10 - Jamie

I can’t believe how well the date with Sophia went. She’s so interesting and intriguing, I just can’t get enough of her no matter what I do.

Even though it’s been a few days since the date, I still feel as though it went really well and that we have a good connection.

However, my good mood can easily be squashed because of one particular individual, and when her name flashes on my phone screen, I can’t help the way that my face drops.

Cindy is asleep upstairs, and so I know that I need to control my temper if I’m going to get through this conversation with Jennifer without any issues.

“Yes?”

“Isn’t that just a lovely way to greet me,” she sighs as though she’s my mother and is disappointed with me yet again. But I don’t care; I’m past her ways, and I don’t want anything to do with her anymore.

I think of Jennifer as the kind of woman who is dragging me through hell just for kicks. She has no reason to make my life so miserable, but she does. She’s rid of me, and yet she’s still trying to find a reason to bother me.

“What do you want?”

“I was just wondering if your lawyer has spoken to you yet about my most recent request?”

“About your new custody terms? Look, you can forget it, alright? They’re not going to let you have Cindy outside of the weekends. The sooner that you accept that, the quicker that we can get through this process and get on with ending things.”

There’s silence on the other end of the line, and I don’t know whether to be worried or pleased. I wait with bated breath.

“This isn’t over, Jamie. I’ve told you before that I’m going to win and appeal the decision, so that’s what I’m doing. I hope that you understand that.”

“I do, I just... don’t you want this to end? Don’t you want us to be free from each other and never have to talk to one another again?”

“Of course, I do, but I’m not going anywhere without my daughter.”

I know that she’s not going to give in, there’s no point in just using words against her over the phone. However, I also know that there’s no point in wasting my breath on someone like her in general.

Cindy is the most important thing, and I can’t have her experiencing unfounded arguments like this. No matter how young she is, I don’t want her to experience the negativity that’s shrouding her parents.

“Look, say what you want. We’ll settle this in court, but believe me, you don’t have a chance.”

My words are met with laughter on the other end of the line. I wince at how bitter she sounds, but there’s nothing that I can do or say that will change her mind on this issue.

“Oh, believe me, I’ve heard all about your newest idea to get full custody. Did you really think that leaving the military is going to help your case?”

I freeze at her words.
